چکیده
Abstract The physical properties of a quantum many-body system can, in principle, be determined by diagonalizing the respective Hamiltonian, but dimensions its matrix representation scale exponentially with number degrees freedom. Hence, only small systems that are described through simple models can tackled via exact diagonalization. To overcome this limitation, numerical methods based on renormalization group paradigm restrict problem to manageable subspace large full Hilbert space have been put forth. A striking example is density-matrix (DMRG), which has become reference method obtain low-energy one-dimensional short-range interactions. Here, we provide pedagogical introduction DMRG, presenting both original formulation and modern tensor-network-based version. This colloquium sets itself apart from previous contributions two ways. First, didactic code implementations provided bridge gap between conceptual practical understanding. Second, concise self-contained tensor-network employed version DMRG given, thus allowing reader effortlessly cross deep chasm formulations without having explore broad literature tensor networks. We expect review find wide readership among students researchers who taking their first steps simulations DMRG. Graphic abstract

The density-matrix renormalization group: a short introduction.
The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method has established itself over the last decade as the leading method for the simulation of the statics and dynamics of one-dimensional strongly correlated quantum lattice systems. The DMRG is a method that shares features of a renormalization group procedure (which here generates a flow in the space of reduced density operators) and of a varia...
متن کاملDisordered Systems and the Functional Renormalization Group, a Pedagogical Introduction
In this article, we review basic facts about disordered systems, especially the existence of many metastable states and and the resulting failure of dimensional reduction. Besides techniques based on the Gaussian variational method and replica-symmetry breaking (RSB), the functional renormalization group (FRG) is the only general method capable of attacking strongly disordered systems. We expla...
متن کاملDensity-matrix renormalization group algorithms
The Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) was developed by White [1, 2] in 1992 to overcome the problems arising in the application of real-space renormalization groups to quantum lattice many-body systems in solid-state physics. Since then the approach has been extended to a great variety of problems in all fields of physics and even in quantum chemistry. The numerous applications of DMR...
متن کاملThe density-matrix renormalization group
The density-matrix renormalization group sDMRGd is a numerical algorithm for the efficient truncation of the Hilbert space of low-dimensional strongly correlated quantum systems based on a rather general decimation prescription. This algorithm has achieved unprecedented precision in the description of one-dimensional quantum systems. It has therefore quickly become the method of choice for nume...
متن کاملDynamical density-matrix renormalization group
The dynamical density-matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) method is a numerical technique for calculating the zero-temperature dynamical properties in low-dimensional quantum many-body systems. For the onedimensional Hubbard model and its extensions, DDMRG allows for accurate calculations of these properties for lattices with hundreds of sites and particles and for any excitation energy. The k...
